A Cohabitation agreement is a legal contract between couples who desire to live together irrespective of them being homosexual or heterosexual beings. It is seen that in several ways such partners may be sometimes treated as married couples, for example when they desire to apply for mortgage or are planning out child maintenance. In several sectors, pensions, property rights, and inheritance are treated in a different manner.

In cohabitation agreement, there is always documentation for the couples who desire to live together in order to defend themselves from unnecessary litigation and expenditure in case of cohabitation breakdown. They can undoubtedly control their rights over property and the arrangements that can be made for mutual economic support, handling debt and caring for children.

This agreement is more like a prenuptial agreement that usually permits the individuals concerned to find out from beforehand about what will happen to the assets that have been bought jointly if there is a cohabitation breakdown.
